This week, Facebook announced the launch of a new company called Internet.org. This company will be a joined partnership between Facebook, Samsung, Ericsson, Nokia, Qualcomm, Opera and MediaTek. Their main goal will be bringing affordable Internet access to the world. All seven companies will work together to create cheap high-quality smartphones and affordable Internet access.

Although it is very difficult to believe, only one third of the world population has Internet access in 2013. To those of us who had been lucky enough, technology has become part of our everyday lives, and we definitely take it for granted. However, there are more than 5 billion people living without Internet, without smartphones, and without access to information from a simple click. The adoption rate of the Internet access across the world is currently 9%. Facebook as well as all other 6 partners aim to make this rate grow much faster.
Internet.org will have three major goals to fulfill: 1) Provide the rest of the world with affordable Internet access; 2) Improve network's efficiency, and 3) Help businesses develop mobile business models. According to experts, this strategy of bringing connection to the entire world may benefit everyone, especially the smartphone makers. By getting 5 more billion people online, the mobile market will most definitely feel the positive benefits of such altruistic campaign.

Google is currently the leader in bringing Internet to the rest of the world. The company's latest project, Project Loon, involves giant balloons beaming 3G Internet connection to disconnected communities.
